Hoping for a Wonderful Weekend!
On a funny note... mama was telling me about Billie's speech therapy practice. She said Billie has picture cards she studies and has to tell the therapist what it's a picture of. One particular picture got a good giggle from Billie and mama.
The card was a picture of a little girl sitting on a bench.
When mama asked Billie what it was Billie replied, "A girl."
What kind of girl? "A little girl."
What is she doing? "She is sitting on a, she is sitting on a..."
To which mama replied, "The little girl is sitting on a b.... (pause) The little girl is sitting on a b.... (pause) a b.... (pause) a b...."
And Billie replied to mama, "I-N-G-O!"
Get it... B-I-N-G-O
Ok, those of you familiar with our family will truly understand the humor in this one. For those that don't understand just know our mama loves to play bingo. She is not as avid a player as she used to be but that's a whole new story in itself. How funny! I just love the things that pop out of Billie when she is talking. She is doing awesome and usually gets all of her verbal responses correct but if you've been talking to her lately you can pick up pieces of Billie's personality when she gives you an honest, off the cuff reply to your prompt.
One particular speech practice I saw her therapist do with her when I visited contained two word phrases to which Billie was expected to finish the phrase with a word that should follow. As the therapist told her, it doesn't have to be correct. Just to have Billie speak a word was great, to have her reply with an actual correct response was even better. So, back to the phrase... the list goes like this
Fork and _____ Billie says "spoon"
Boy and _____ Billie says "girl"
on down the list the phrase is Cigarettes and ______
Billie's first attempt at this one was interesting to watch. She made a terrible face and just kept thinking and thinking of something to say. The therapist would repeat, "Cigarette and ___" Billie would wrinkle her nose and make a disapproving face. Then she replied, "don't like this one." The therapist agreed and they both laughed at their disgust for cigarettes. So, later when I returned to Florida and was on the phone with Billie practicing her list we went down the line and she was popping those responses out like the exercise was a piece of cake. It was not until I got to "Cigarette and _____" pause. Pause. Pause. And I hear Billie say, "I want not do this one." Amen sister!
I mean come on! Wouldn't you think they would not want to put cigarettes in a practice session for a STROKE VICTIM!!! Why mention them at all. I know smoking had nothing to do with my sister's stroke but there are many stroke victims who had been smokers and their stroke risks were elevated due to smoking.
Anyway, that phrase is off the list now. I have taken a sharpie marker and rubbed it out permanently!
Hmmm, Bingo and Cigarettes.... go ahead and laugh mama!!! You too Billie!!!
Oh, my... I miss you guys and love you so much. Thank you both for filling my days with such wonderful news of Billie's recovery. I look forward to every conversation with you both. Oh, yeah... speaking of conversations, don't think I haven't noticed it's been over a week since my last conversation with you Billie. Considering what a tough day Monday was, I'll let you slide for this week but you better get some rest this weekend sweetheart because I insist you say hello and I love you at least once next week!! I'm running low on my sifter's sweet sounds of love and laughter!!!!! I need a refill please!!!!!

Billie gave us a little scare.
When Taylor arrived home a few minutes later mama let her know that Billie was having this sensation and pain. Mama said within a matter of minutes Billie began to look far off to the right, as far as her eyes could go to the right. Billie's pupils became very small and she then began to sweat profusely on her chin, nose, face and arms.
Mama calmly had Taylor stay at Billie's side while she called 911 for assistance. They also called Lonnie at work to notify him of Billie's condition.
The fire department was at Billie's home quickly where they assessed her and put her on an oxygen mask and told mama Billies blood pressure was slightly elevated so they continued to check it until the paramedics arrived.
Mama said Billie never lost consciousness and was able to respond to general questions, she just seemed to not be talking very much and the sweating and her eye movement was frightening.
Once the paramedics arrived Billie was put into the ambulance and Taylor and mama followed the ambulance in their cars to the Danville Regional Hospital Emergency Room. Lonnie was there waiting for them, apparently it took a little while for the ambulance to get to the house.
The hospital staff did many tests on Billie and she seemed stable and the only concern they could find right away was that Billie had been on a prescription to control seizures. Billie's meds ran out on this prescription on Friday and the doctor's office was not available to renew the prescription through the pharmacy that day. Billie went off the meds "cold turkey" and they think that may have been what caused her episode. Mama left the hospital to go to the pharmacy and get Billie's meds refilled. She returned with Billie's meds and she was able to resume the medication. It was predicted that she must have suffered a seizure. After a few hours the nurses advised Billie she could stay overnight for observation and wait for the test results but Billie requested to go home.
She was home with her family by 5 p.m. Monday night. She was exhausted but in good spirits. She woke Tuesday morning feeling a bit tired but went about her day as usual. She had speech and physical therapy Tuesday as well. Billie's discharge papers from the hospital that day said she may have suffered a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). They found it possible that a portion of the blood clot in her artery (the one that caused the initial stroke in February) may have broken off and is dissolving. She will be seeing Dr. Hurtado today to determine his diagnosis.
I called and spoke with Lonnie briefly Monday night and they were relaxing on the couch as usual. He said she seems tired but ok. They are a bit shook up by this but in positive spirits. Billie will usually get on the phone with me for a few minutes each weekday when I call but so far she has declined to talk to me this week. I am sure she is tired and emotional and I am such a cry baby she probably is not ready for me on the phone right now. When I do hear from her I will surely post what she has to say. Keep her in your thoughts and prayers please. This has probably been very frightening for her and she will need our support and encouragement to help her through this.
What is a TIA or transient ischemic attack?
A TIA is a "warning stroke" or "mini-stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage. Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce your risk of a major stroke.
Most strokes aren't preceded by TIAs. However, of the people who've had one or more TIAs, more than a third will later have a stroke. In fact, a person who's had one or more TIAs is more likely to have a stroke than someone of the same age and sex who hasn't.
TIAs are important in predicting if a stroke will occur rather than when one will happen. They can occur days, weeks or even months before a major stroke. In about half the cases, the stroke occurs within one year of the TIA.
What causes a transient ischemic attack?
TIAs occur when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery, and part of the brain doesn't get the blood it needs. The symptoms occur rapidly and last a relatively short time. Most TIAs last less than five minutes. The average is about a minute. Unlike stroke, when a TIA is over, there's no injury to the brain.
What are the symptoms of a TIA?
It's very important to recognize the warning signs of a TIA or stroke. The usual TIA symptoms are the same as those of stroke, only temporary:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
The short duration of these symptoms and lack of permanent brain injury is the main difference between TIA and stroke.
TIAs are extremely important predictors of stroke. Don't ignore them! If symptoms appear, CALL 9-1-1 TO GET MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY. A doctor should determine if a TIA or stroke has occurred, or if it's another medical problem with similar symptoms. Some examples are seizure, fainting, migraine headache, or general medical or cardiac condition. Prompt medical or surgical attention to these symptoms could prevent a fatal or disabling stroke from occurring.

A Great Day!
After a long day of pampering, shopping and visiting they called it a day and went back to Billie's place where they had lunch and Billie took a little nap on the couch.
Mama is treating Billie to a hair appointment next week. I bet Billie can't wait for that!

It's a GIRLS DAY OUT!!
She also wished me a happy birthday. Ahhh, my birthday wish came true!
And... Mama (Joan) said when she was helping Billie transfer from her wheelchair this morning Billie lifted her right arm, bent the elbow and placed her hand on mama's arm. "Then she grinned at me!" mama said. Joan also said that during their therapy yesterday Billie scratched her with her right hand. These movements are great! Muscle tone is coming back and she is reconnecting!! I am so happy to write this for everyone to see. Progress! Billie! Progress!
Mama says Billie did well with the one sided walker. It is called a Hemi Walker (if you want to see what it is go here: http://www.gosouthernmd.com/store/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=31937
Billie's physical therapist brought it in this week and she did well using it. She uses it like a cane, according to Joan. She is only practicing with it right now but may move on to use it regularly, I'll keep everyone posted as I learn more.
Have a good time getting pampered today Billie! You really deserve it!!

Wish I had more to post...
Billie had her speech and physical therapy Tuesday and should have more today. She is doing well according to Joan (mama) and her therapists are pleased with her performance. Thea, the physical therapist, brought Billie a rolling cane type of walker to work with and mama said Billie did well. I can only assume Billie must be tired from all of her workouts and other daily activities. I have called a few times this week and she has not really been in the mood to talk. Yesterday she had a brief conversation with me using Joan's (mama's) blue tooth. She is not talking to me as much as she was after my visit to Virginia. Her words are clear but I am not hearing her generate new topics of conversation as much as she did before.
Hope to have more to share with you all soon. Maybe Taylor could add a bit on here since she has been home this week for Spring Break. (hint, hint, hint -- we all want to know how your mom is doing, honey!!!)
I'll keep doing my best and keep you all up to date on whatever I find out but it's a long way from Virginia to Florida and I can only bother them with phone calls so much.
I love you sifter! Miss you more than words can say!!!!!

Billie had a hippity hoppity Easter Weekend!
Billie ventured out with Taylor, Amy and Jennifer Saturday for a little road trip to Martinsville. Taylor is having her prom dress made by a friend and they all took a drive to have Taylor's last fitting. Billie said she enjoyed the trip. They all said Billie was singing along with the songs in the car. After the fitting they stopped in for a little Mexican Food before heading home.
It's good to hear you are getting out and about Billie! How great to have been able to go with Taylor for her fitting... her Senior Prom Dress!
Lonnie has the day off today and he and Billie are planning a trip to the nursery to get some plants and flowers to fill her deck with. Can't wait to see what beauties they come home with!
Happy Easter Billie Jo! Thanks for sending such sweet news our way!

She has always had a way with words...
Well, I woke up feeling a bit under the weather today and hadn't put a smile on my face at all. I was going through some of my daycare files to find some training documents I need to update this month. When I pulled out the folder with the paperwork I needed out fell a card. The last time I opened this folder was in 2006. It is a three-year credential and it just sits idle until the time expires.
So, this card falls out and this is what it said,
"Do you know how much you mean to me?
The answer is almost too big to wrap words around.
The closest I can come is to say you never fail to come through when you're needed the most, and you do so with understanding and with no strings attached.
And before you say, 'Well, that's what sister's are for'
Let me tell you that the way I see it, you always seem to go way beyond mere "family obligation."
I don't know how a person becomes as generous and selfless as you but I do know this...
I'm so grateful to have you for a sister.
And I want to thank you for being you... and let you know just how much you mean to me...
now and always!"
(This was a Hallmark Card written by Linda Lee Elrod -- hope I don't get sued for copying this on here.)
Wow! She has always had a knack for choosing just the right cards to get her point across and I am so amazed that this particular card has literally fallen into my lap this morning. After I wipe these tears away I will surely smile all day long.
You see, Billie, even without the ability to speak to me with all of your words you have still found a way to touch my heart and soul and let me know you are still with me. I thank you so much big sifter for all of your love and dedication. My life would not be the same without you and I love you so, so much!!!
I hope you are having a wonderful day today.

Tuesday is Billie's workout day.
I am amazed at how much she talks now. Her words come slowly but she is putting together sentences most of the time. It seems she gets a little frustrated and I always tell her to take her time, I'll wait forever if I have to. I want to hear everything she has to say! The first thing she told me was, "I want to play with you." I WANT TO PLAY WITH HER TOO!!!! We talked for about half an hour and she put me in the best mood. To hear her voice again just makes my heart melt.
She is really making some great progress!
I love you sifter and truly hope you know just how much you mean to me.
She told me today was her "workout" but she said it with passion. She is aware of how hard she will have to work but she is giving it her all!
Keep up the good hard work Billie! Can't wait to talk to you again tomorrow, just as you requested!
Sunday we spoke on the phone...
When I reached the Howard Frankland Bridge just outside of Tampa I called to let them know we had made it home. Lonnie said Billie had had a nice day and then she took the phone. I asked her if Grandpa Jack and mama had come by today to see her and she told me, "Yes, I think that is true." I inquired if they had moved the camper yet and she replied, "Yes, That is true." Her speech is improving so much. She takes a pause and the words don't just flow out in a quick stream but she takes her time and speaks slowly and clearly when she can. I told her I missed her dearly and had thought of her all day long. She rewarded me with, "I miss you too." I thought I'd cry my eyes out. I told her I love you. She replied, "I wuv you too." After a few minutes of quiet and a little laughter she told me, " I think I... I think back Wonnie." I asked her if she was ready to go and give the phone back to Lonnie and she said, "Yes." I told her goodbye and I love her and she replied, "I wuv too."
It is not easy for her to have a phone conversation I am sure. She cannot see my face and it must be odd but I am so very proud and honored that she does all she can.
I called last night to see how her day was and when Lonnie went out to check on the grill (he was cooking ribs) he gave her the phone and she spoke to me a little bit. I asked her if her day was good and she said, "Yes." She told me she was having some pain in her arm and leg but it "depends on what doing." I reminded her the therapist had predicted this pain would come soon and she should get a heating pad for comfort. She agreed and told me, "Tomorrow is workout." She has physical and speech therapy today (Tuesday). I cannot wait to see what they have to say after their sessions today! I'll be sure to keep you all up to date. Remember, she checks this site regularly as well as her yahoo email and her facebook account. Keep those positive vibes coming her way everyone! She looks forward to our comments.
Have a beautiful day Billie Jo! We miss you so, so much.

A week in review...
Sunday was a gorgeous day and Billie was in a fantastic mood. She needed a new rug to put in front of her back door (my boys would have tracked grass and red dirt all over her place otherwise!) so I was off to find her one. I offered for her to come along and she surprised me by saying yes. We took a little drive to Big Lots (I almost asked her to pose for a photo in front of Piggly Wiggly for Glenn to enjoy but she was ready to get back home). At Big Lots I grabbed a cart and she maneuvered her wheelchair up and down each and every aisle of that store. She is quite to shopper as we all know... she's got a keen eye for those hard to find objects too. We were searching for a comfy pillow for her to use while in her wheelchair to prevent her right arm from getting caught between her body and the arm of the chair. I thought I had a keen eye, but she managed to spot the perfect pillow ON THE TOP SHELF, RIGHT NEXT TO WHERE I WAS STANDING. You can see this pillow in her photo with the boys, it's an animal print (of course, her fav!). We shopped for about an hour and when we had perused the entire store we checked out and headed home. I was so honored to be the one to take her for her first outing! She likes the pillow and the floor mat really saved the house from my little monster's draggings. It was a gorgeous day and we made sure to get outside.
Billie has a swing on her deck that converts into a hammock type bed. Lonnie and Taylor were busy with yard work so we laid the swing down and filled it with soft pillows and a quilt and she let me do her physical therapy out there. It was so pleasant and the sun felt great. Unfortunately, she and I failed to realize that Lonnie had some Pampas Grass to chop back for spring and about 1/2 way through her therapy we had to take cover from all the flying grass!! We laughed and laughed as we took cover. Lonnie did try his very best to keep the debris to a minimum but it blew in the wind and literally snowed on us. Neither of us really minded it, though. It was a great laugh and we'll have a funny story to tell for years and years to come.
Monday was a busy day for Billie as usual. She showed me the ropes and taught me her routine for the day. Coffee, newspaper, getting dressed, physical therapy, breakfast, speech practice, lunch, physical therapy, etc, etc... She is really hard at work from the minute she wakes up until after dinner when she is off to cuddle time with Lonnie on the couch. Yes, I worked my magic on her feet each night and I am sure she enjoyed it because she would point at her feet and tell me "I want you to rub my feet".
Tuesday was a rainy day so we had to stay indoors. I assisted Billie with her shower and am happy to say she does almost all of this herself. I basically held her shower handle over her so she could bathe herself. Her physical therapist arrived around 11 a.m. and I got to see Billie in action. After some chair exercises for her legs and arms I got to see Billie use her walker. It was exhilarating to see my sister get up on her feet and walk across the room. She is doing so well. She did not have her brace on her leg today and her right foot tended to twist on her each step so the therapist reminded us to have it on each time she will be on her feet. Billie was willing to help with some daily chores and she folded a load of towels and washcloths by herself.
Wednesday was another wet day. She was fitted for her new brace that will fit her leg much better and will not only stabilize her ankle but will lock her knee into a fixed position to help with her walking therapy. They hope to have this in for her in a couple of weeks. Her current brace is a small, splint like brace that only goes about mid-calf and is very uncomfortable for her. I am sure she is looking forward to the new brace to arrive. Today she folded a load of her own clothes. She even did socks!
Thursday was a good day but it rained cats and dogs on us again. Her physical therapist arrived around 2 p.m. Billie had her brace on today and her walking was much better. She made two laps around the living room with her walker today. Her therapist was pleased with Billie's progress and even commented she is feeling more muscle tone and control in Billie's right upper arm and shoulder. She told Billie she felt a little stiffness and tightness in those arm muscles. She also noticed a little more tightness in the muscles in her hip and thigh area. This is fantastic news! The therapist told her she'd be getting stiffness and then would likely need to use some heat on her muscles to ease the pain she will have eventually as she regains feeling in her limbs. The therapist left Billie's house with a smile and encouraging words. Billie's speech therapist arrived around 4:15 p.m., in the rain. She got right to work with Billie practicing facial exercises with a mirror. Billie had a little difficulty with individual letter sounds. It was hard for Billie to find placement for her tongue and to remember how to hold her mouth to achieve each individual sound. For example "SSSSSS" came out as "HHHHH", "FFFFFFF" was tough because Billie would bite down on her lip and sort of hum "MMMMMMM". The therapist was very reassuring and reminded Billie that her practice would make this exercise much easier over time. The therapist then provided Billie a workbook and flashcards to practice saying words. I nearly squealed with joy when the therapist looked so surprised when Billie said each word clearly! The therapist told me she was really impressed with Billie's progress in just on week. I noticed a lot more coming out of her myself but didn't mention this since I've only been here a week. I was very happy to hear that the professional was seeing improvement so quickly.
Friday was a good day and Billie got a shower this morning. We did lots of speech practice, physical therapy and Billie walked two laps around the living room with her walker and her brace. She really booked it around the room today! We got to get outside a little while before the clouds covered the sunshine and got us all chilly. We enjoyed sitting out on the deck with Mama (Joan) and watched Lonnie toss football with Zach and Tyger. She folded some towels and a load of her laundry and even put her clothes away today by herself.
So, now it's Saturday and I have to pack up for our drive back to Florida. I want to fill the day with fun memories. Lonnie has helped her dress and he just straight ironed her hair so she's raring to go. I better get off of here and get my shower so I can keep up with her! I am so fortunate to have been able to come this week. I know my sister is working hard and busting butt to get back to herself again.

It's been a good week here in Virginia!
Billie is truly getting back to herself.
She has established herself a daily routine. She wakes at 7 a.m., enjoys her coffee and newspaper, then it's breakfast time. After breakfast she enjoys some TV time, bird watching, working word search puzzles, reading her emails and enjoying her favorite magazines. She takes a shower every couple of days and does most of this herself. She washes herself and her hair and mainly requires assistance with getting in and out of the tub as well as help with cleaning her back. She has Physical Therapy each Tuesday and Thursday, a nurse visits the house to do these sessions and Billie is really kicking some butt!!! She is scheduled to begin Speech Therapy today as well.
The family has been provided a chart of exercises and therapy to do with Billie daily. She is progressing well now that they have this. She was home over a week without direction as to what exercises she should do and she experienced some swelling in her right leg. She is doing leg and arm exercises for range of motion mostly right now. She does these three times a day and has done so well she is even helping do them herself.
She is being very independent. She gets around the house using her wheelchair and her left foot and arm/hand. The only dilemma with this so far is maneuvering the turns when she goes in and out of the hallway. She is persistent and, believe me, she gets it done!!
Those of us who have been fortunate enough to visit Billie at home can tell right away that she is in full swing. She won't hesitate to let you know when something is out of place or needs to be done. She is very aware of the clock and has reestablished a lot of her normal routines. She is no couch potato, that's for sure. This girl is keeping so active, she's wearing me out!
Although I have only been here a few days I see very noticeable improvement in her speech as well as the muscle tone in her arm and leg. When I did her first therapy session with her she seemed to be a bit limp and allowed me to do most of her motions for her. As I said before, she had no instructions to go by until this week. It has only been a few days and she is already doing some of her therapy unassisted and she is beginning to get a little stiffness in the bend of her knee (I assume from the muscle tone returning). We will be sure to confirm this with her Physical Therapist today.
Taylor is coming home from school around 12:30 each day and she has lunch with her mom and they go over the days events and enjoy some mother/daughter time. Taylor is learning how to do her mother's exercises and she even had her mom up using the walker yesterday. Lonnie is such a trooper! He is definitely in love with his wife! I just love to see him with her, they have this unspoken language and it's a pleasure to see them cuddle up on the sofa for a little R&R each night while they watch their favorite shows together. Billie keeps him up each night until 11-11:30 but he doesn't complain. He is an early riser himself and he is up and in her room bright and early every day to be sure she slept well and see if she needs anything from him before he goes to work. He is usually home around 3:30 so he gets some good, quality time with her daily as well. He makes a mean steak, I'm here to tell you! We got to enjoy that last night. It has been awesome to sit around the family dinner table with them each night. You can feel the love in this home, that is for sure.
Well, there is so much more I could write but I will save it for my next post.
Until then.... Neener, neener!!! I get to hang out with my sifter and yoooouuuu doooon't!!!
